Legal Shield Formerly Prepaid Legal – Is It Worth It?

by Robin Marks

Why Legal Shield?

When you consider Legal Shield as a home based business you must understand that there are a wide variety of service based products that are available to the public via the MLM model. If a person wants to start a MLM business of their own, there will be no shortage of products and services to choose from. However, one product that has been going strong for almost 40 years is a product that offers legal services on a pre-paid basis. The name of the brand was called Prepaid Legal until very recently. Now the product brand is called Legal Shield.

Understanding the Prepaid Legal / Legal Shield Product

The product offers consumers the ability to subscribe to a monthly legal plan of sorts. How it works is that the consumer pays a monthly membership fee in order to belong to the program. When they join, they get a membership card, and they receive a listing of attorneys that are in their state, and in their area. These attorneys have agreed in advance to service Legal Shield members. The types of practices that the attorneys operate varies. However, members will be able to find attorneys who specialize in the most popular types of practices such as divorce, family law, incorporation, etc. The benefits of people becoming members of this company is that they receive deep discounts on their legal services.

Click Here To Learn 3 “Weird” Marketing Tricks That Help You Sell More Legal Shield Memberships And Get People Addicted To Joining Your Legal Shield Business… (Thats Unless You’re Already Recruiting Way More People Than You Can Handle)

As a matter of fact, members will receive certain services for free. For example, members will be able to receive at least one free phone consultation. They will be able to receive at least one free face to face consultation with the attorney. And, they will be able to receive services such as a free document review. These services might seem trite, but attorneys can charge hundreds of dollars per hour for the same services.

Attorneys who affiliate themselves with this company feel that its worth it to dispense their services at a discount because the sheer number of members who subscribe to this program will make up for any high fees lost on a client. In short, when an attorney affiliates themselves with this program, they will have access to thousands of possible clients who would have never been available before by common advertising means.

Is Legal shield A Good Opportunity Or A Waste Of Time

With regards to whether or not This is a good opportunity, there are pros and cons to consider. On the one hand, legal services is a product that is needed by everyone at one point or another. A person doesn’t have to have something going wrong in their lives to hire an attorney. For example, a person might want to start a business, and they’ll need a lawyer to incorporate themselves. Or, a person might need to draft or update a will. A lawyer will take care of this as well. Then again, with an over 50 percent divorce rate in this country, divorce attorneys will never be out of fashion.

Why Did Prepaid Legal Services Change Their Name To Legal Shield?

The fact is that legal services is a solid product to promote to consumers to sell. It’s for this reason that Legal Shield is a great business opportunity for those who would like to start their own business. On the other hand, there are slight cons. For one thing, when Legal Shield was known previously as Prepaid Legal, there were lots of SEC complaints and investigations. The company changed its name in order to lose the negative reputation that went with the brand. In addition to this, the company transitioned from a public-owned company to a privately owned company. This was done to eliminate the financial transparency that was available before.

So, is it worth it to join as a network marketer? The product is solid. If the marketer doesn’t have issues with marketing this product or with recruiting sales staff for a product with a troubled past, then this opportunity is probably worth it.

The best thing you can do to guarantee your success is to learn the necessary skills on how to market and get leads.

I happen to be a member and can’t figure out how I made do without it. I am in the apartment complex business. It really helps when dealing with tenants and knowing what your legal exposure is to them. Case in point ; One of my units caught fire and I, being nice was going to put them up in a vacant unit I had. That is until I found out they were the cause of the fire. Then it became, Am I legally obligated to do this when they have already caused destruction of one unit , why would I put them in another one. Legal Shield helped me with this. Its safe to say that as long as I have a small business I will be a member

Robin,
Great write up. Here are a few points from the inside. Prepaid Legal was bought out by an NY based equity firm for 650 million. Which allowed it to be privately owned. This allows the company ti do more risky business moves that the board wouldn’t allow in order to protect share holders. The name change was for marketing purposes. Yes we now have a marketing division in which wasn’t done for the first ~40 years. Also, as noted on the better business bureau website any complaint that was filed and brought to the company’s attention was resolved which has allowed the company to keep a A+ rating.
Keep up the great work man. I appreciate your insights and look forward to the future.

Robin,
Great article! I am defiantly going to take a look at your other articles as well. I am a legal shield member and also just became an Associate almost 2 months ago. I decided to become part of the business after my Mom used the membership with great success in getting her rent deposit back and also I used it to help me with a tax problem from 2009. I was very skeptical before becoming part of the business for the fact i have done mlm businesses in the past with little to no success. long story short I have made a little over 1k in less than 2 months. Not life changing money by any means, but for the little time i have put in it has been well worth my while. I am looking forward to growing my Legal Shield business in 2012!

Hey Anifer I’m not a Legal Shield rep but if I was, heres my best advice to you (someone who is skeptical and probably always looking for the negative in things) … Don’t Join! Save your money, It probably won’t workout for YOU.

Heres my #… 1-404-981-0210… as im sure you won’t call it but if for some strange reason you did I’d be happy to explain further as to why YOU wouldn’t make it in Legal Shield or any other Network Marketing Opportunity YOU decided to pursue.

BTW, It has nothing to do with the opportunity but everything to do with YOU.

Hopefully you found the answers you were looking for.

been a member an executive level associate for over 10 years-
yes it helps– for some info and a letter-
once the receiving end Google the law firms name
it goes into the trash— for a very simple reason–
ready???
because over 90% of the people who buy the plan and try to use it
will get the letter– and then have no money to take it further at 300.00 dollars an hour— the broke are the primary buyers of the plan.

most times you can get the same advice- for $0 from the local attorney–and usually much better advice.

it my experience with the law firms this company uses– you will spend more time trying to get the law firms to do their jobs than you will meeting new customers…try spending over a week of your time trying to keep one member happy.
Most associates are so brainwashed- they cant see the product in other way than they are told to see it—most people today do not think about what is really being said.

i can go on– its ok for a quick question for the $17 a month– but call another attorney– who hasn’t been paid– and is hungry– who works when they have all ready been pre-paid…. ever prepay a contractor? its rare they will ever show up again– no different here— the attorneys just refer you to title V – a 25% discount on the $350hr rate.

the company wins in court– why??? because they have the best attorneys representing them, not you…. and that makes the most sense

I hope you aren’t still an Associate. You obviously have no belief in what we are doing. I have used my benefit 29+ times and I’m not poor. They have saved me thousands of dollars, stress and time. The feedback I get 80-90% of the time from clients is thankfulness, we have this service available. I have hundreds of clients on my books and continuously growing. If you OVER-promise, rather than under-promise and over deliver, then that makes all the difference. I haven’t had to use title 5 once, but if I did, I’d rather get a discount than, than full price.

Joe I don’t believe you are a 10 year Executive Director or Top earner in any company… Just for the simple fact you took the time to point out some perceived negatives about a company you supposedly believe in.

DON’T USE THEM

If they give you horrible legal advice that gets you even further into a mess (on top of being a victim of something you called them for), they will (1) disclaim it, (2) say they can give you more [horrible] advice, (3) say you can go to the bar if you have any problems.

They will do bad things and make NO reparations….unless by reparations you mean go down a chain of people (just like any of the other Horrible companies out there) that will say the same double-speak.

I had never heard of Legal Shield until recently. I went to a meeting with a friend and was really intriqued. I am a terrible sales person and being very new to the area I reside in, I have limited connections.
I love the idea of earning extra money especially since I am a single mom with college for my oldest and I myself am soon going to be paying off my graduate level degree………….
I meet with Bobby Diggs from the New England area. Many assosicates got up and spoke at the meeting as well about their sucess including a single mom and a janitor who all shared their profits.
These were actual people right here in my area who turned thier financial lives around.
So my question is this, is it really as easy as I pay my 150 and that is it?
I cannot do seminars or public speaking- very introverted.
Any advice?
I am thinking of paying my fee next week.

Carol, don’t think that MLMs are easy money, they do take work. Robin I am sure will tell you along with anyone in this industry that has actually become a success (eg. Diamond, Executive Consultant, etc). With that said, call me sometime and I will review any company, their comp plans, and their leadership that you choose. You will see that I will never sugarcoat any company at all.

I too am an introvert. In speech class, I passed out, hitting my head on the projector on the way down. Very embarrassing and until another girl threw up trying to give her speech, I was the talk of the class.
With Legal Shield, I say very little. I started with the 10 Core commitments. Not sure if you have those yet, but they are simple enough and I am working my way to getting better and better at things. I still say very little; it’s just my personality and I detest sales although I know every business is in sales of some kind. Because I have such a hard time talking to people and the thought of being a sales person makes me cringe, I give people the Success from Home magazines with one of my business cards stapled inside to the page with the customer story. I bought some clear labels and made some simple “To start your business or start your membership, please log into my hub site http://www.legalshield.com/hub/kimberlyparis” and I stick those at the end of articles where they’ll fit. I do have business cards and I will give them out to people, immediately when someone asks what I do for a living. This took me some time to get in the habit of doing and at first it felt so weird and cumbersome until I bought a really pretty business card holder and placed it in my purse front pocket. Easy to pull out, elegant to hand out, and I feel confident with this system. If they ask what it is (eeeeeek!) — “here is a magazine that published a few articles about my company. Please take it, let me know what you think when you get a chance to look at.” I then change the subject with, “What do you do?” Because I don’t say much, I have 100% retention in my business. The only thing I had to learn was how to close a deal if they called me for more information over the phone. I have 28 memberships on the books I have only personally closed 5. The magazine works, so just be yourself but all ways have something to hand out with you. Now, my trick for the helping people get signed up (remember, I don’t do public speaking or private sales at all — too scary and way out of my comfort zone). If the person called — they are interested!!!!!!!! I say, hello and I am so happy they called me. “What is your question?” . . . . . . . “That’s a great question. I’ve never had this question before. Could you stay on the line for just one minute and I’ll get us someone who can answer this question for both of us.” If the call is from 8-5 p.m. I call Legal Shield member services, which is programmed into my phone and three way the call. When all the questions are answered I ask the person in member services if they could please help me get my client signed up?” This has worked for me and it’s easy enough because I didn’t have to answer the question, I just found someone that could and then asked them to help me sign them up. I had one person call me after hours and I called my director. He talked too much and scared the person away. LOL! Just use the magazines or some other tool and be consistent with giving the information to people. I read in a sales book somewhere, “in sales, show me a man (woman) telling their story to at least 5 people a day, and I’ll show you a man (woman) making good money.” Don’t tell yourself what you can’t do, try just doing what you can do. Just be yourself.
(FYI – because my retention is the best, 100%, at my level my residual income on each $26/mo. membership is $39.09. Obviously, I am not very big in the company but over time my customers will add up. Even at the lowest level of Jr. Associate, the residual income on a $26/mo. plan is $15.54 with a retention of 85% or higher. I wonder how much money I would need to have in a savings account to generate this amount in interest?)
Also, one last thing, if for any reason the attorneys in the provider law firm your client’s are assigned to do not perform for them as their contract specifies, help your customer call Legal Shield Corporate and file a formal complaint. The company has a resolution department that focuses on the customer’s satisfaction.

legalshield is a great solid company, with 40 yrs to back that up. legalshield has provided to me and my family financial freedom, time, and the opportunity to run my own business on a part time basis, and to make a great amount of money. but what i love the most about legalshield is the ability to help others, not only for the people who need the service but also for the people who want to create their own business and grow as professionals but most of all as individuals. legalshield does that and much more for you and your family!! Hello, I have requested your information but have not yet recieved it, I will resubmit my information:
Would like to comment on the negative comments concerning Legal Shield (PPL)
I have been in 3 Major Network Marketing Companies
1. Amway: First Introduction to Job Freedom/Financial Freedom and Time Freedom. Personal Develoment was Huge, I STILL have the recommened Book List and many Cassette Tapes LOL!
2. Mary Kay Cosmetics…WOW the Value, Respect and Empowerment offered to Woman is Awesome! Personal Growth, Woman not having to compete with men allowed to Lead, Grow and Develop all while maintaing the “God given Female Attributes, Using strenghts that at the time most companies MLM or Jobs
did’nt or would’nt cultivate…like Relationships, Kindness, “Go-Give” willing to truly Help someone, Caring and Sensitivity…Leading with a Heart! (That’s the Old School Mary Kay)
3. Pre-Paid Legal ( Legal Shield) Getting Use to that name STILL 9Had to throw out so much stuff including $100 Car Tags…)
Anyway, understand the Legal World, Personal Development has been the Strongest in this Company..seen many people come in from the “Streets” NOT bringing a team with them and truly succeed. Mr Stonechiper his Heart, Believe and Love for what he did, the commiment, the sacrfice and the Vision ( I always said if he could have been a Woman in this Business her would be Mary Kay Ash, and if she could have been a man in MLM she would be Harland)
Similar struggles, Heart, Visions…

I said all this to say in each of these Business’es, I experineced Exceptional Leadership and also Flawed Leadership, Integrity Lead leaders and associates and those that lacked integrity…
Issues’s and situations within these comoanies that I would have handled differntly or did’nt agree with ( But it was not my compay)
The Point: You can google any MLM/Net Wk Markert Company and EVERY one of them will have a link saying wait! Scam! I know I did it as a test, Herbalife, Avon, Nu Skin, Beauti control, Mary Kay, PPL, Amyway (Quick Star) ViSalus, Beach Body…
You have to learm to Eat the Hay (what’s good and profitable) and leave the sticks ( negative and not profitable)
Research a companycheck thier core values…remember values changed with leadership changes…it should’nt cause YOUR values to change! You operate with Integrity because of your Character, not because you are following someone else. No matter what company there is good and bad, postive and negative…Find a company you like, and can Believe in, because with selling, it’s basically a “Transfer of Belief” fueled with Passion and Purpose for the product and you can’t have Passion & Purpose if you don’t BELIEVE in the Company and or it’s Products & Services!!
Much Success to Everyone!

I am a LegalShield Rep and have the membership. And I will always have the membership even if I quit the small business part of it. It’s that GOOD. The LegalShield business part of it is great too but its a little hard to sell memberships because people don’t know/don’t know much about the company and are conditioned by sociaty to except most legal bad situations and ignore it or try to deal with it yourself because Lawyers are to expensive. But thats where Legal “Shield” helps you and protects YOU and Your family.
Sorry…got alittle carried away there. Read more at my website- http://www.biznok.net

Hi, I’m a member and not an associate but wanted to leave a comment. A few years ago I allowed my cousin to live with me in attempt to get some help with my rent and plans to move in 4 months to a better neighborhood. I wasnt close to her but she needed a place and figured this could help us both out. But she had a different plan. When the time came to move, she said she didnt have anywhere or the $, but i said we agreed and if you want to stay longer you have to pay but she then said she just wants to stay with the apt. single mom & I couldn’t afford consult an attorney and housing court was no help. I did not know what to do. A friend at work told me about legal shield and I joined. I was able to get the help I needed and steps to know what to do. I also leaned that i could later sue for damages. They were such a help. I later had an issue with work and also received information about labor laws and what i could do. The only time I feel LS failed me was when they were suppose to send my old landlord a letter of demand for my deposit and they never did and one time an attorney seemed to get annoyed with my questions. I stayed a member because In this time, people want to take and the advice I was given in the past was so helpful. I suggested to all my friends who rent out to join.

Hello,
I’ve been a Prepaid Legal member for about 15 years. I’ve used them a few times, and thought it was well worth it. This last month I needed them, and found out they are now Legal Shield. My impression of them has gone downhill fast. I needed swift service trying to respond to a false tenent claim. I called on 7/27 and talked to the firm assigned to my area. I emailed documents to get things rolling. Then over that weekend emailed a few more items that would support the case. Then on Monday called to make sure they got it. I was informed that every time I called or emailed, it re-started a 3 day period in which the firm has to prepare anything. That was kind of irritating. So the 3 days was up yesterday. Still nothing. But, if I call to ask what is going on? Yep, a new 3 day period starts over. I am very frustrated because I’m trying to prevent a situation from getting worse.

Listen,

My advice on that one is to call the rep that sold you the service or (since it was so long ago that may not be possible) call corporate.

Situations like that should be addressed and there is a Legal Shield line you can call in your area to address concerns like this.

Please, if you cannot resolve it feel free to use the contact page on my website :)

Great post. Just wanted to offer my 2cents. I market the legal shield business opportunity among other things online because I’m a strong believer that one should have several income streams and I normally market products and services I can personally vouch for. This service has benefited my family and I on numerous occasions. We’ve used it for landlord/tenant issues, traffic tickets/accidents, legal documents, will preparation, etc. The providing law firm has always called us back within in the same day. Sometimes within the hour. Sure we’ve been referred to other lawyers on some issues if the issue did not fall within the realm of services provided by our membership. Another provided service is the identity theft protection. I receive monthly email notifications for every member of my family notifying me if there are any changes to our credit reports. Truly thankful for these services, I would still be getting a great deal If I paid double the monthly fee amount! I recommend you try it out to protect yourself. You never know when legal issues will arise and you will need immediate council. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. -LaToya

I have been a member since 1995 for 20+ $’s a month. Over the years, I occassionally used the service for minor things and was very satisfied and it did save me lawyer fees as well as help me recoup money owed to me. In 2009 after the downturn of the economy and some looming possible financial hardship I negotiated a loan modification with my mortgage holder. Six months later my mortgage company went out of business and my mortgage was taken over by Bank of America. I continued making the same payments to them when three months later they informed me that they did not have to honor an agreement from another mortgage company and that I was 9 payments behind, (even though I never missed a payment), owed thousands of dollars and increased my payment significantly. I tried to work it out myself at first, but they threatened foreclosure if I did not bring it current to what they said it should be. I contacted my legagl shield attorneys and found out that foreclosure defense was part of my services. The attorneys went to work trying to work on my behalf with BOA. During this time they uncovered a number of questionable practices by the bank that BOA was doing when dealilng with me. It took 2 years and my legal shield attorney threatening to sue BOA for BOA to finally cave and work out an agreement with me. Legal Shiled attorneys negotiated a fixed 2% loan rate and a $93,000+ reduction in my principal mortgage and BOA agreed so as not to get sued. The whole process never cost me a dime beyond my monthly membership payment. Over the eyars I have paid approximately $5,180 in membership payments and Legal Shield not only saved my house for me but netted me a $93,000+ reduction. I think that is an awesome return on my investment. When I first got the membership (as Pre-Paid Legal) I never imagined needing them for something like this – but I am ever so grateful to them and grateful I kept my membership.
